How to Choose the Right Master Mason Apron
Choosing a Master Mason apron should be straightforward. Here is a clear guide so you can pick the right one for your lodge, degree, and budget without confusion.
1. Know Your Degree and Jurisdiction
A Master Mason apron is worn after you have been raised. Different Grand Lodges have slightly different styles (American Blue Lodge, English Emulation, Canadian, etc.). Check your lodge or Grand Lodge guidelines first so the colours, size, and emblems match what is expected.
2. Decide on Material
- Lambskin or leather – Traditional, soft, and durable. Preferred by many Brothers for everyday lodge use.
- Satin / moire / synthetic – Clean look, often more affordable, good for candidates or bulk orders.
- Velvet – Richer appearance, commonly used on higher-quality or Past Master styles.
3. Embroidery Type Matters
Hand embroidery (especially with gold or silver bullion) gives raised detail and a more formal look. Machine embroidery is neat, consistent, and better for budget or large orders. For a standard Master Mason apron, both are acceptable — choose based on how formal you want it to look and how long you plan to keep it.
4. Practical Features to Check
- Adjustable belt with a secure clasp (snake clasp is common and reliable)
- Rear pocket for gloves or small items
- Soft padding for comfort during longer meetings
- Correct size (most are around 13–16 inches)
5. Colour and Emblem
Most Master Mason aprons are white with blue accents or fully white. The Square and Compasses with the letter G is the standard emblem. Some jurisdictions allow additional pillar or vine work. Stick to what your lodge uses so the apron looks correct in the room.
