How to Choose the Right Master Mason or Past Master Apron

Choosing a Masonic apron is not a fashion decision — it is a mark of rank, jurisdiction, and respect for the Craft. Whether you are a newly raised Master Mason or a Past Master preparing for installation or Grand Lodge events, the right apron must match your lodge’s regulations, your rank, and the quality expected of hand-embroidered regalia.

At Next Masonic we manufacture every apron in our own factory. We send photos of the finished piece for your approval before it ships. This guide explains exactly how to select the correct apron so you never have to return or replace it.

1. Confirm your rank and jurisdiction first

Blue Lodge (Craft) aprons differ by degree and by Grand Lodge regulation. A Master Mason apron is typically white lambskin or white cloth with sky-blue or navy borders and the Square & Compasses. A Past Master apron often adds the Past Master’s emblem (the 47th Problem of Euclid / Square & Compasses with the sun or other local variants) and may use different border colours or fringe according to your Grand Lodge.

  • Entered Apprentice / Fellowcraft — plain white, minimal or no embroidery.
  • Master Mason — white body, coloured border (commonly sky blue or navy), Square & Compasses.
  • Past Master — additional Past Master jewel or emblem; some jurisdictions require specific fringe or tassels.

Always check your lodge’s by-laws or ask the Lodge Secretary / Director of Ceremonies before ordering. If you send us a photo or PDF of the required pattern, we match it exactly.

2. Material: lambskin vs cloth vs synthetic

Traditional Master Mason aprons use genuine or high-grade imitation lambskin. Many modern lodges accept quality cotton, satin, or moire with hand or machine embroidery. We offer:

  • Premium white lambskin-look with hand-embroidered bullion or chenille.
  • Durable cotton and moire options for everyday lodge use and travel.
  • Full custom materials when your jurisdiction specifies a particular fabric.

Hand embroidery lasts longer and holds rank symbols more sharply than cheap printed or low-grade machine work. That is why we embroider in-house and photograph the finished apron before shipping.

3. Size, shape and proportions

Apron size must look proportionate on the wearer. Standard adult sizes exist, but taller or larger brethren often need a longer body or wider flap. Past Master aprons with fringe or tassels need extra length so the fringe does not sit on the shoes. When you order, include approximate height or request a size chart — we adjust before production.

4. Embroidery style and colours

Colours are regulated. Sky blue, navy, purple, crimson and gold each belong to specific ranks or bodies. Bullion wire, chenille and silk thread produce different visual weights. We match the exact shade and technique your lodge uses. If you are unsure, send a clear photo of an existing correct apron from your lodge; we replicate it.

5. Past Master specific details

Past Master aprons frequently include:

  • The Past Master emblem particular to your Grand Lodge.
  • Fringe, tassels or braid in the correct metal colour (gold or silver).
  • Sometimes a different border colour from the Master Mason apron.

Provide the correct emblem reference. We will not guess — we wait for your confirmation photo before the apron leaves the factory.

6. Custom and lodge-bulk orders

Many lodges order a set of Master Mason and Past Master aprons together so every brother matches. We accept single custom pieces and bulk lodge orders. Use the same pattern file or photo for the whole set and we keep embroidery consistent across every apron. Lodge members receive a 10% discount with code LODGE10.

Quick checklist before you order

  1. Rank (Master Mason or Past Master) confirmed.
  2. Grand Lodge / jurisdiction known.
  3. Preferred material (lambskin-look, cotton, moire, other).
  4. Correct emblem and border colour (photo or description).
  5. Size or height note if non-standard.
  6. Request “photos before shipping” (standard with every custom order).
